NY WORLD TRADE CENTRE NEW LOGO

The new logo for the World Trade Center in New York City has been revealed—it is the result of a US$3.57 million branding project that was undertaken by Landor Associates.

Considering the historical significance of the site, the logo is rather unsurprisingly brimming with meaning and references—however, according to Fast Co. Design, it is more “confusing” than poetic.

A GHOST IN THE FAMOUS PICASSO PAINTING

Picasso's "the blue room"

Pablo Picasso's famous painting of a bathing woman in a blue room carries a secret: High-tech scans have revealed that the well-known scene was painted on top of a portrait of an unidentified man.

Conservators here at the Phillips Collection used infrared imaging to virtually peel back the paint of the artist's famous 1901 painting "The Blue Room"; underneath, they discovered a portrait of a man in a bow tie, resting his head on his arm. Live Science visited the collection for a behind-the-scenes look at how the discovery was made.

A NEW LOGO FOR ADIDAS

Based in Frankfurt, Germany, BRAND DESIGNER Oğuzhan Öçalan recently gave sportswear giant Adidas a branding makeover.

After analyzing Adidas’ branding design, he concluded that the brand’s use of different logos for each of its sub-brands can be confusing for consumers and thus weaken the branding strategy.

HIGHLY CREATIVE PEOPLE DO 18 THINGS DIFFERENTLY

Creativity works in mysterious and often paradoxical ways. Creative thinking is a stable, defining characteristic in some personalities, but it may also change based on situation and context. Inspiration and ideas often arise seemingly out of nowhere and then fail to show up when we most need them, and creative thinking requires complex cognition yet is completely distinct from the thinking process.

CONSIDER THIS, BEFORE HIRING A DESIGN PARTNER

Design is a service, not a magic spell. There are designers who do it well, and those who do it poorly; some produce profitable outcomes, and some waste money. More and more companies view design as an important strategic element of their business and are seeking partners to help them understand how it can help. If you're setting out to do so, you'll need to confront uncertainty about how to get the most value from the investment and carefully consider

3D PRINTING

3D printing: Everything you want to knowEveryone cringes a bit when a beautiful sports car is blown up in movies. It happened in James Bond's Skyfall with the iconic Aston Martin DB5. But fret not, that wasn't an original car; it was a miniature replica that was "printed" out.

The production team could not destroy the vintage car, so they turned to a British company that could print a replica at one-third the original scale. The process is known as 'additive manufacturing' or 'rapid prototyping'. And here's the good news: it's getting cheaper and you can own such a printer.

MICROSOFT NEW LOGO

Microsoft unveiled a brand-new company logo Thursday morning, and graphic designers have given it a split vote.

While some believe the company has a winner with the new logo’s simple, square design, others say it’s too boring. (You can have your say in the poll at the end of this article.)

Sagi Haviv, who designed logos for the Library of Congress and Armani Exchange, thinks the logo simply isn’t distinctive enough. By opting for a simple array of four colored squares, Haviv says Microsoft missed a big opportunity.

NEW DIET COKE PACKAGING

Makes Permanent Limited-Edition Design Featuring Oversize 'D,' 'K'

Diet Coke is making a permanent change to its packaging for the first time in more than five years.

Beginning Sept. 1, the brand will switch to a design introduced last fall as a limited-edition package. The design, created by Turner Duckworth, features a section of the Diet Coke logo, cropped to prominently feature the "D" and the 'k.' The can's color scheme, red and black on a silver background remains the same. The packaging design only impacts the brand's cans, not bottles.

Kerry Tressler, a spokeswoman for the brand said the cropped logo is coming back "by popular demand."

WHO MADE THE OLYMPIC RINGS?

PIXELATED CAMOUFLAGE: LOST IN THE WILDERNESS

Pixelated Army Uniform.
There's a lot of brown in Afghanistan, says one aggrieved soldier, but the U.S. Army's camo print contains not a speck. Standard-issue uniforms come instead in a pixelated marble of gray and khaki, as if they were made to blend into a gravel pit or a slice of Valdeon cheese. The problematic design, called the Universal Camouflage Pattern (or UCP), was released in
