Last April, Dong Nguyen, a quiet 28-year-old who lived with his parents in Hanoi, Vietnam, and had a day job programming location devices for taxis, spent a holiday weekend making a mobile game. He wanted it to be simple but challenging, in the spirit of the Nintendo games he grew up playing. The object was to fly a bug-eyed, big-lipped, bloated bird between a series of green vertical pipes. The quicker a player tapped the screen, the higher the bird would flap. He called it Flappy Bird.

BLACK LOTUS, MAGIC THE GATHERING'S MOST FAMOUS CARD, SELLS FOR $ 27,302
Even though you’re not in middle school anymore and may not have even seen a Magic the Gathering card in years, the game is as big as it has ever been. In fact, thanks to a plethora of trading and collectible card games on iOS and Android, Blizzard’s Hearthstone, and Mojang’s Scrolls, the trading card game genre is experiencing one of its most successful runs. Though Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! are stable, Magic is the king of the crop, which is why its most famous card, the Black Lotus, just sold on eBay for $27,302.

SONY REVEALS PLAYSTATION 4
Sony launched the latest salvo in its ongoing rivalry with Microsoft with the launch of the PlayStation 4, the first of a new generation of consoles. At an event held in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York's Manhattan Center, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 4 would go on sale this Christmas. It refused to set a price, or even show the console itself but it is unlikely to cost much less than £300.

HOW THE KIDS AT BOX ARE DISRUPTING SOFTWARE'S MOST LUCRATIVE GAME
Aaron Levine |
Twenty months ago Aaron Levie, all of 26 years old, did something arguably foolish, undeniably gutsy and entirely counter to the prevailing mood that startups should be “lean” in the Internet age. Forty-five minutes into a routine meeting with his board at Box, Levie blithely announced: “I want to make a small adjustment. We need to raise an extra $50 million.” An awkward pause followed. Box had previously raised $106 million, already a heady sum for a company with just $25 million in sales and no profits. Levie’s early investor and biggest booster, Josh Stein of venture firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson, piped up: “I’m sorry, but you said $15 million, right?”

MAGIC THE GATHERING: DOMRI RADE FROM "GATECRASH"
Today Wizards of the Coast confirmed a rumor about a new Planewsalker from their upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Gatecrash." Domri Rade is the second Planeswalker in the set, the first being Gideon, Champion of Justice. This news leads credence to the other four mythic rares that were also spoiled by the same person on Craigslist.org.
As a three mana Planeswalker, Domri Rade joins the elite ranks of Liliana of the Veil, Ajani, Caller of the Pride, and Jace Beleran. While Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded is the only two mana-costed Planeswalker, because Domri Rade is green you'll have a high chance of casting him on your second thanks to a mana dork

GAME, MONEY AND MUDER IN "MAGIC: THE GATHERING" CARD GAME
For someone who doesn't play the fantasy card game "Magic: The Gathering," watching a round and trying to understand what is going on is difficult.
The pace is fast. There are cards and dice. A round can be over before you know it.
The game has recently taken the local spotlight for a very dark reason: Sean Dugas, 30, one of the area's most active players, was killed, according to police, by two Magic players who robbed him for his collection of cards.

NEXT-GEN TOY FOR PLAYING WITH DATA
The cofounders of Sifteo first imagined how great it would be to sort through a pile of digital data as if it were a pile of Legos while graduate students at the MIT Media Lab. Thirteen million dollars and several generations of prototypes later, today they announced the next generation of their Sifteo Cubes, an interactive gaming system of LEGO-like blocks—except with computer screens.

GAMING WORLD CAN BE CRUEL TO WOMEN
Hi. My name is Elisa, and I am a gamer and a geek. I’m at the computer writing this in a Star Trek T-shirt, in celebration of the recent Mars Curiosity rover landing. I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember, having had a Nintendo Power magazine thrust into my hands as soon as I could sound out the words on the page in order to be my older brother’s co-pilot. Since then, I have developed a fierce love of games, some of which I defend with the ferocity of a mother protecting her cubs. I have a tattoo of a Trivial Pursuit pie on my right hip. My haircut resembles one of my favorite characters, Lilith, from Borderlands. You can’t tell me Revolution X wasn’t amazing. You just can’t.

TABLETOP CO-OP: MAGIC THE GATHERING HORDE MODE
Last week, the latest digital version of uber-popular collectible card game Magic: the Gathering was released. There could be no better time, then, to cover the "real life" version of Magic for Tabletop Co-Op. Magic is, generally speaking, a highly competitive game, but what if there were a way to play it in co-op? I've got good news for you, reader, the always innovative Magic community has created just such a format. Horde Magic blends the awesome deckbuilding fun of Magic with the unrelenting pressure and tension of survival modes, like Gears of War 3's Horde mode, or Left 4 Dead's Survival. The combination is glorious!

NORWALK TABLETOP GAME STORE DRAW A CROWD
Steven Bryant, former co-owner of Heroes Comics and Cards, decided that selling comic books was not really his thing. Yet, he still wanted to do something with his passion for Magic the Gathering, a popular trading card game.
"I sold my share of Heroes to my partner and I took some time off before I opened the store here," said Bryant.
