Radiation from cellphones has been listed as a potential cancer risk by the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today. The determination was made by a team of 31 scientists in the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
The team reviewed dozens of studies before reaching their conclusions.
According to Cancer.gov cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) energy (radio waves), which is a form of radiation that has been under study for many years for its effects on the human body.
The concern is that RF energy may affect the brain and tissues in the head because of they are generally held close to the head. Research has found that RF energy can cause malignant (cancerous) brain tumors. The amount of RF energy a cell phone user experiences depends on several factors including the number of calls they take, the distance from the nearest cellular base station and whether the device is a hands free device.
Today's announcement is the opposite of what people have been told in the past by WHO about cell phones. In the past cell phone users were told that no ill effects came from using a mobile phone. Now it is being said that the phones are a 'carcinogenic hazard.'
That label is also used for lead, engine exhaust fumes and chloroform reports the Daily Mail.
