CHOCOLATE MAY PROTECT THE BRAIN AND HEART

Eating high levels of chocolate could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, according to a review of previous research.

Data from 114,009 patients suggested risk was cut by about a third, according to a study published on the BMJ website.

But the researchers warned that excessive consumption would result in other illnesses.

The British Heart Foundation said there were better ways to protect the heart.

EARL GREY TEA

Earl Grey tea is a tea blend with a distinctive flavour and aroma derived from the addition of oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit.

Traditionally the term "Earl Grey" was applied only to black tea; however, today the term is used for other teas that contain oil of bergamot, or a flavour.

THE THINGS THAT MAKE STEVE JOBS SO GREAT

Steve Jobs isn't an engineer or a designer. But he's one of the greatest users of technology of all time, and that made all the difference.

In the wake of Steve Jobs's resignation, let's consider the greatest decision he ever made. It didn't happen in a garage in Cupertino, sweating with Steve Wozniak as they dreamed up a computer for the common man. Or in a conference room, as managers told him that no one would ever pay $500 for a portable music player. Or in another conference room, as new managers told him no one would ever pay $400 for a cellphone. Rather, it was in a dusty basement of the Apple campus.

"SON OF SAM" SERIAL KILLER DAVID BERKOWITZ SAYS HE WON'T SEEK PAROLE IN 2012

Convicted serial killer David Berkowitz -- who terrorized New York in the late 1970s, killing six people and wounding seven -- will not seek parole during his next opportunity in May, Berkowitz told FoxNews.com exclusively.

In a two-page letter to FoxNews.com, Berkowitz, also known as "Son of Sam," said he has "no interest" in parole thanks to forgiveness by Jesus Christ. Berkowitz, 58, has previously been denied parole five times.

CLIMATE IS A MAJOR VIOLENCE TRIGGER

A new study in the journal Nature finds that war is associated with global climate.

Researchers from Princeton University and the Earth Institute at Columbia University focused on the natural climate cycle known as El Nino Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. This periodic warming of Pacific Ocean waters occurs every three to five years - alternating with cooling periods known as La Nina.

STEVE JOBS'S LEGACY

Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs resigned as CEO from Apple Wednesday, after a remarkable career. (He will continue with Apple as chairman of the board.) Jobs is that rare person who truly has transformed an industry—several times, in fact—and in many ways changed the daily activities of people throughout the world. He is also a controversial man, reviled by many, loved by many, admired by many, and criticized by many.

STEVE JOBS CHANGES PEOPLE'S LIVES

The onslaught of news stories in the wake of Steve Jobs’s resignation as Apple’s CEO shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, Jobs leaves his CEO post having completed a tremendously successful reign as head of one of the U.S.’s most valuable companies. But there’s been an emotional tenor to a lot of the coverage you wouldn’t expect to see if, say, the head of Exxon Mobil decided to call it a career.

AFTER STEVE JOBS LEAVES

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Apple headquarters is still standing in this leafy Silicon Valley suburb even after Steve Jobs' industry-rattling announcement that he was resigning as chief executive of the company he co-founded in a garage more than three decades ago.

That news comes as little surprise in the Valley, where few doubted Thursday that despite the loss of its legendary leader Apple would continue to succeed — at least for the next few years.

HEAR THE MUSIC BEFORE THE SONG IS OVER

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

FACEBOOK HAS HIT 1 TRILLION PAGE VIEWS

Facebook has officially hit 1 trillion page views, according to figures released for web traffic in June, Time magazine’s TechLand column reports.

According to Time, those 870 million visitors are around 120 million greater than Facebook's reported total number of registered users. The discrepancy may be due to non-Facebook members visiting the site from other social media links or through search engine traffic.

STEVE JOBS TALKED ABOUT DEATH (video)

"Death is ... the single most important invention of life," then Apple CEO Steve Jobs told students at their Stanford University graduation ceremony.

Existential words for a once self-described Buddhist, but Jobs is a complex guy. "Death is very likely the single best of invention of life ... it is life's change agent," he told the grads with a sense of urgency, asking them to be aware of their mortality lest they waste time and opportunities. "Your time is limited. So don't waste it by living someone else's life."

APPLE FANS PAY TRIBUTE TO "INDUSTRY ICON" STEVE JOBS

SAN FRANCISCO/SINGAPORE, Aug 25 (Reuters) - From San Francisco to Shanghai to Sydney, fans of Apple Inc paid extraordinary tribute to Steve Jobs after he resigned as CEO, calling him an icon for the entire technology industry, not just the company he co-founded.

The outpouring on blogs and Twitter began minutes after Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January, announced he would leave the chief executive's post but carry on as chairman of Apple.

STEVE JOBS STEPPING DOWN AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF APPLE

Steven P. Jobs in San Francisco in June.
SAN FRANCISCO — Steven P. Jobs, whose insistent vision that he knew what consumers wanted made Apple one of the world’s most valuable and influential companies, is stepping down as chief executive, the company announced late Wednesday.

“I have always said that if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know,” Mr. Jobs said in a letter released by the company. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

MINDSET - JOHN MAXWELL (video)

PROMETHEUS: ALIEN'S PREQUEL

SAN DIEGO — Ridley Scott is coming back to science fiction after a quarter century, and we’ve just seen our first glimpse of his new film Prometheus. The good news is, it’s intense, sweaty, scary and beautiful — and intended to scare your pants off.

Spoilers ahead …

ALIEN PREQUEL WILL TELL "SPACE JOCKEY" STORY

An Alien prequel that unspools the back story of the mysterious Space Jockey — the giant, fossilized creature with the burst-open chest from the first movie — is definitely going to happen, according to Ridley Scott.

“It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?’” the director told MTV News. “The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer’s chair.”

RIDLEY SCOTT REVEALS "ALIEN" PREQUEL DETAILS

It isn't overstating things to say that Ridley Scott is among the greatest filmmakers of all time, and "Alien" is among the greatest films of all time. So how could anyone not be eager to learn every little detail about his prequel to the 1979 classic?

On Thursday (April 22), we caught up with the "Robin Hood" director to speak with him for next week's MTV Summer Movie Preview. And when he mentioned that he was feasting his eyes upon the latest "Untitled 'Alien' Prequel" script pages, we couldn't help but ask some questions.

THE KIDS ARE NOT ALL RIGHT

WHEN I sit with my two teenagers, and they are a million miles away, absorbed by the titillating roil of online social life, the addictive pull of video games and virtual worlds, as they stare endlessly at video clips and digital pictures of themselves and their friends, it feels like something is wrong.

No doubt my parents felt similarly about the things I did as a kid, as did my grandparents about my parents’ childhood activities. But the issues confronting parents today can’t be dismissed as mere generational prejudices. There is reason to believe that childhood itself is now in crisis.

CERTAIN FOODS MAY BE THE BEST MEDICINE FOR LOWERING "BAD" CHOLESTEROL

For patients with high levels of so-called bad cholesterol, doctors routinely reach for two remedies: cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and a diet that cuts out foods high in saturated fat, such as ice cream, red meat and butter.

But new research has found that when it comes to lowering artery-clogging cholesterol, what you eat may be more important than what you don't eat.

THE SPACE HOTEL

Until American companies start launching private spaceships, Russian-built space capsules will be the only way to get astronauts up to the International Space Station or other orbital outposts. If these images are accurate at all, Russian-built spacecraft might as well stay the only option.

Future space tourists will have some pretty nice digs in Orbital Technologies’ space hotels. The pods are supposed to launch by 2016, offering space for wealthy travelers or private companies who want to do microgravity research. Just like our own astronauts nowadays, visitors will reach the pods on Russian Soyuz rockets.

MOTHER THERESA: THE MEANING OF LIFE

Have you ever think about life?  Why are we living and what for?

It is hard to answer these questions.

Finally, i found statements by Mother Teresa.

Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is costly, icare for it.
Life is wealth, keep it.
Life is mystery, know it.
Life is love, enjoy it.
Life is a promise, fulfil it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.

TOMB INSCRIPTION: THE CHANGE

“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.

As I grew older and wiser I discovered the world would not change. So I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country, but it too seemed immovable.

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.

US GOVERNMENT DEBTS

If you understand how the US Government works then you realize that there is no problem with Debt ratings downgrade.

It is the month of August, on the shores of the Black Sea. It is raining, and the little town looks totally deserted. It is tough times, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

Suddenly, a rich tourist comes to town. He enters the only hotel, lays a 500 Euro note on the reception counter, and goes to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one.

THE FUTURE OF ARMORED DEFENSE IS A MOLTEN FORCEFIELD (video)

When it comes to surviving an RPG attack, the best defense is an impenetrable defense; or at least that's what Israeli and US researchers believe. And they're developing rocket- and missile-neutralizing Active Protection Systems to do just that.

Active Protection Systems (APS) are designed to prevent small and medium arms fire as well as propelled explosives (grenades included) from reaching or destroying a target. These systems use a variety of sensors to monitor for incoming threats. Once one is detected, the APS calculates the inbound trajectory, deploys counter-measures to either disarm or destroy the threat, and then traces the flightpath back to the shooter.

NEW "BLADE RUNNER" FILM WILL BE DIRECTED BY RIDLEY SCOTT (video)

You wait 30 years for a Ridley Scott science fiction film, then two come along at once. Not content with bringing Prometheus, his forthcoming pseudo-prequel to Alien to the big screen, the veteran British film-maker has signed on to make another Blade Runner movie.

US production company Alcon Entertainment purchased the rights to make a new film earlier this year, and there was speculation at the time that Scott might be asked to get involved. The original 1982 movie, with its iconic Vangelis score and future noir stylings, is a genuine science-fiction classic which continues to attract new fans nearly three decades after its release. In 2007, it was named the second most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society, and in 1993 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

SAM CHILDERS: MACHINE GUN PREACHER (video)

Sam Childers (born 1962) is a former gang biker who now dedicates his life and resources to rescue children in the war zone of Sudan. Childers and his wife Lynn founded and operate Angels of East Africa, the Children’s Village Orphanage in Nimule, Sudan, where they currently have more than 300 children in their care.

Early life

Sam Childers was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of Paul Childers, a union ironworker. Sam had two older brothers, Paul Jr. and George. He also had a sister, Donna, who died of a heart problem before she was a year old. While growing up, his parents moved from place to place following construction projects.

SAM CHILDERS: THE HUNT FOR JOSEPH KONY (video)

The Lord’s Resistance Army—a murderous rebel group made up mostly of Ugandans, and led by a crazed warlord named Joseph Kony—today ranges across the jungles and scrubland of Uganda, Congo, Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Its ranks may be depleted, but the remnant deals death wherever it goes. U.S.-backed military forces are trying to hunt Kony down. So is a Pennsylvania-based evangelical preacher named Sam Childers—a biker and former drug dealer who has found his calling in this quest for a killer. Last year the author joined Childers as he continued his hunt for Kony. It is a story of pursuer and pursued, each believing that God is on his side.

THE GUN THAT KILLED OSAMA BIN LADEN (video)

The biggest secret in the special operations community—what gun did SEALs from "DevGru" kill Osama bin Laden with—has been revealed. Two military gear blogs, citing multiple insider sources, credit the highly reliable HK416 rifle, an M-16 type weapon, with the "double tap" of 5.56 mm bullets to bin Laden's head.

XM25 PRECISION GRENADE LAUNCHER (video)

There's a good reason soldiers call it "the Punisher." With the XM25 grenade launcher, which the Army has tested in Afghanistan, shooters can set the grenade to explode in the air at a precise distance, allowing them to hit targets that are shielded from the front.

Many high-tech weapons are announced by military scientists and defense firms with great fanfare; then the systems can fade into obscurity once they face the realities of war. But the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System—a grenade launcher with a ballistic computer that places air-bursting rounds with precision—has been field-tested in Afghanistan, where a limited number of troops determined its readiness for wider deployment.

THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF "THE DARK KNIGHT RISES" (video)

Comic-book geeks call it the "Bruce Wayne moment" — a pivotal incident that decides, with crystal clarity, one's mission in life.

In the comics, Wayne became the costumed crimefighter Batman after witnessing the murder of his parents in the street. Michael E. Uslan's Bruce Wayne moment came with the 1966 TV premiere of "Batman," the campy action comedy starring Adam West. Uslan, then a comics-obsessed 14-year-old, was not happy.

"I was in my den in Deal Park when the 'Batman' TV show came on the air," he says. "I was simultaneously thrilled and horrified by what I was seeing. I knew the whole world was laughing at Batman. That really killed me. This particular night, I decided somehow, some day, I would find a way to eliminate from the collective consciousness of the world three little words: 'pow,' 'zap' and 'wham.'

APPLE'S NEW HEADQUARTERS

As we noted in June, Apple is building what is sure to be the coolest office building ever in Cuptertino, CA. The building is so important to the company that no less than Steve Jobs went to a Cupertino City Council meeting a couple months ago to seal the deal. They were eating out of his hand. All the rest is really a formality at this point. “There is no chance that we’re saying no,” Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong said after the meeting.

Flying in a helicopter along the Thames, Stephen Wiltshire memorised the appearance and position of hundreds of London's buildings. Over the next five days he drew the panorama in fine detail on a 13ft curving canvas, never referring to notes, sketches or photographs. All buildings were drawn to scale and in position, with the precise number of floors and other structural features included on landmarks such as the Swiss Re tower, known as the Gherkin, and Canary Wharf.

THE LIFE SAVING STATION (video)

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a crude little life-saving station. The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves went out day and night tirelessly searching for the lost. Some of those who were saved, and various others in the surrounding area, wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews trained. The little life-saving station grew.

MARGIN CALL (video)

The key players at an investment firm become entangled during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster.

A HOUSE FOR A FRIEND

A great and wise man once called one of his workmen to him saying, "Go into the far country and build for me a house. The decisions of planning and of actual construction will be yours, but remember, I shall come to accept your work for a very special friend of mine."

And so the workman departed with a light heart for his field of labor. Material of all kinds was plentiful here, but the workman had a mind of his own. "Surely," he thought, "I know my business. I can use a bit of inferior materials here and cheat on my workmanship a little there, and still make the finished work look good. Only I will know that what I have built has weaknesses."

BIG ROCKS

A while back I was reading about an expert on subject of time management.

One day this expert was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration I'm sure those students will never forget. After I share it with you, you'll never forget it either.

As this man stood in front of the group of high-powered overachievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz." Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouthed mason jar and set it on a table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar.

CARL'S GARDEN

Carl was a quiet man. He didn't talk much. He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake.

Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well.

Before his retirement, he took the bus to work each morning. The lone sight of him walking down the street often worried us. He had a slight limp from a bullet wound received in WWII.

THE THING (video)

THE WRATH OF KHAN

One morning Genghis Khan, the great king and warrior, rode out into the woods to have a day’s sport. Many of his friends were with him. They rode out gaily, carrying their bows and arrows. Behind them came the servants with the hounds.

It was a merry hunting party. The woods rang with their shouts and laughter. They expected to carry much game home in the evening.

On the king’s wrist sat his favorite hawk, for in those days hawks were trained to hunt. At a word from their masters they would fly high up into the air, and look around for prey. If they chanced to see a deer or a rabbit, they would swoop down upon it swift as any arrow.

THE HAWK OF KHAN

In dewy grass, there hops a timid hare,
Who finds a blossom with his wand’ring nose,
Delighting in a delicacy so rare.

Behind the hare a serpent’s shadow grows.
It rises up and lunges with a hiss,
To make its prey of that which ate the rose.

The bulging snake slides on in sated bliss
And finds a running brook by which to sleep,
To cool himself while dozing in the mist.

Yet, while he dreams the waters slowly creep,
Because of rain, to flood the banks at night.
The snake lies limp, for whom none care to weep.

‘WE’RE NOT INVINCIBLE’

BY MARA GAY SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2011

For the Navy SEALs, it was Black Friday.

The elite unit of 2,000 men is trained to be prepared for just about anything. But even for them, this was too much: Twenty-two Navy SEALs killed when their helicopter was reportedly shot down over the hills of Afghanistan early Saturday at the conclusion of a mission begun late Friday, the bloodiest day in the unit’s 49-year history.

THE RITUAL CAT

When the spiritual teacher and his disciples began their evening meditation, the cat who lived in the monastery made such noise that it distracted them. So the teacher ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening practice. Years later, when the teacher died, the cat continued to be tied up during the meditation session. And when the cat eventually died, another cat was brought to the monastery and tied up. Centuries later, learned descendants of the spiritual teacher wrote scholarly treatises about the religious significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice.

THE NEW "SUPERMAN": MAN OF STEEL

Look! Up on the Web! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Henry Cavill as Superman!

Warner Bros. this morning released the first official image from Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder’s now-shooting reboot of the Superman franchise starring Cavill as the iconic DC Comics superhero.

THE HOMELESS MAN

It was a cold winter's day that Sunday. The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of my car fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they walked in the church.

As I got closer I saw a man leaned up against the wall outside the church. He was almost laying down as if he was asleep. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet, with holes all over them, his toes stuck out.

BEYERDYNAMIC DT 1350

By Tyll Hertsens

Simply put, I'm stunned.

It's hard to make a good sounding sealed headphone, and much more so a small, supra-aural (on-ear) type. They all seem to falter sonically somewhere. In-ear headphones were the only way to get really good portable sound ...

... until now.

The Beyerdynamic DT 1350
Man, I'm in love. It's hard to know where to start when it's all so good. I suppose the place to start is with the manufacturer's intent. From Beyerdynamic's website, the DT 1350 are:

"Closed supraaural headphone for control and monitoring applications, musicians and DJ's."

FEAR OF TRANSFORMATION

Sometimes I feel that my life is a series of trapeze swings. I'm either hanging on to a trapeze bar swinging along or, for a few moments in my life, I'm hurtling across space in between trapeze bars.

Most of the time, I spend my life hanging on for dear life to my trapeze-bar-of-the-moment. It carries me along a certain steady rate of swing and I have the feeling that I'm in control of my life. I know most of the right questions and even some of the right answers. But once in a while, as I'm merrily (or not so merrily) swinging along, I look ahead of me into the distance, and what do I see? I see another trapeze bar swinging toward me. It's empty, and I know, in that place that knows, that this new trapeze bar has my name on it. It is my next step, my growth, my aliveness going to get me. In my heart-of-hearts I know that for me to grow, I must release my grip on the present, well known bar to move to the new one.

DEEP INSIDE

During Nelson Mandela's 19 years imprisoned on Robben Island, one particular commanding officer was the most brutal of them all:

"A few days before Badenhorst's departure, I was called to the main office. General Steyn was visiting the island and wanted to know if we had any complaints. Badenhorst was there as I went through a list of demands. When I had finished, Badenhorst spoke to me directly.

HIS DIFFERENT PLAN

There was once an ambitious young lad who had always dreamt that one day he would become a general in the army. He was intelligent, and the qualities he possessed were more than enough to get him anywhere he wanted. For this he thanked God whom he feared and always prayed that one day his dream would be fulfilled.

Unfortunately when the time came for him to join the army, he was rejected due to the fact that he was flat-footed. After various attempts he gave up the idea of ever becoming a general, and for this he blamed God for not answering his prayer.
